An overview of Connecticut pedestrian laws

When you are on the roadways, there are many other people on them, too. Connecticut roads are shared by vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable because they move slow, are small and often walk in different patterns than traffic is traveling, such as across the roadway.

As a driver, you should be aware of pedestrian laws in Connecticut. This will enable you to be aware of when you must yield to those walking on or near the roadway, along with preparing you for when you are traveling by foot and preventing pedestrian-auto accidents.

Crosswalks

The Connecticut Judicial Branch states pedestrians should always use crosswalks to safely cross the street. If crosswalks are present, they must be used at intersections. If you are driving, you must allow the pedestrian in a crosswalk to have the right of way. However, if there is a stoplight or crossing signal, pedestrians must follow those signals and you do not have to give them the right of way if the signal is not indicating they can walk. If a crosswalk is not at an intersection, or is at a stop sign, pedestrians have the right of way only if they have stepped into the street already.

Crossing without a crosswalk

If a person on foot is crossing the road where there is not a crosswalk, then that person must yield to traffic. However, be aware of those with vision limitations. If you see a visually impaired person as indicated by a cane or a guide dog preparing to cross the street, then you must yield the right of way to that person.

Other rules

The law also states that you must always use a sidewalk if one if available and not walk on the road. If there is no sidewalk, you should walk all the way on the shoulder facing traffic. This is the best way to avoid an accident.

Keeping everyone safe on the road is important. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable. You have to do your part as a driver to watch out for them.
